I enjoyed reading this! Yes to more friction and tasting. Part of my own practice of "friction" is by curating my own feeds. I got into doing RSS feeds, which was one of the earlier ways people were getting content online. You might want to try it out! So instead of IG I open my RSS app. Unfortunately as of now I still open both, lol.

That might be a good compromise, thanks for the idea. I'm really struggling with being intentional online (because there's so much great stuff!) without falling into hours of scrolling, ugh. Right now reading stuff on Substack Notes has been a good substitute, but I'm cognizant of it filling the same void. So, we'll see. We're a work in progress, friend!

The song Còn tuổi nào cho em by Minh, Thịnh Suy has been part of my soft you can do it even if it feels like you can’t playlist for years. I only know what the english lyrics convey, but it’s given me comfort when I needed it.

Looking forward to the rest of the series and I wish you well in your journey towards friction!

Ooh, this is both really cozy and a little haunting (right up my alley). I'm interested in checking out the rest of MINH's discography. Thank you for the recommendation! And for being here 🤍

This encompasses a lot of the frustrations I have about technology and content - and myself, how I consume media and art (and see the key word "consume" here. Do I not watch, read, or listen anymore?).

Thank you so much for sharing, sis. I miss the radio too - so much so that I found myself listening to vinyl mixes from DJ youtubers. There's one that caught my fancy lately: https://youtu.be/gBaUEvQ-VQ8?si=0ttddqAs6CDp0_Yi

It's a "filipino jazz and soul vinyl mix" (and the act of categorizing here is something I can go on a whole other tangent on), with songs that remind me of the days when all I had was cable TV, - cartoons in the morning, our fave problematic noontime shows at lunch, and the news at night; followed by the array of telenovelas in between. The type of stories told on TV as I move through the day back then, from the sentimental feel-goods of Mahal Kong Maynila to the fantastical dramas of shows like Mulawin and Darna (and later on, Agua Bendita), is something I want to reflect deeper on. I miss it. While its possibly partially a yearning to the easy (?) days of childhood, I can't help but feel that the curation of media and art on many streaming platforms is so...sanitized?

I've been listening to Doechii's album "Alligator Bites Never Heal" a lot recently. I was so happy when it won best rap album of the year. When I first heard it, I thought: "Ah, we're SO back." My favorite song on it is called "Death Roll," and the lines that resonated so much with me were:

"I wonder what my friends all think when I'm not there

I love the way my ideas flow when I'm not scared

I lovе the way my hips roll slow

But I don't like the way it feels whеn my vices are absent, I'm not there"

The song itself talks about the paths of self-destruction, especially for creatives in a world that runs on profit. It's sad, but it's so affirming and angry (?) at the same time.

I'm with you on the "consume" — even calling art on the internet as "content" is starting to drive me nuts. I'm trying to unlearn that nonsense, lol.

That mix is GREAT though, this is the stuff I'm looking for! Thank you for sending this my way! I'll be listening to that this Sunday morning 🌷 I definitely feel a strong nostalgic pull, but beyond that I think there's really something to be said about making certain things analog again. The mess and inconvenience of it that we had learned not to appreciate is something we obviously need again. Yes to the "sanitized" nature of a lot of curation these days! Nakakapagod maglinis para maging "aesthetic"!

Also, I did listen to the album because I saw you post about it — it's soooo good 🐊
