What I mean when I say eat well
and take care — a lifelong dream (featuring more photos from our wedding!)
Access
The ability to choose fresh, organic produce, especially those in season, sourced from local farmers; the capacity to store them safely in a warm home with a refrigerator and clean, spacious cupboards; the liberty—physical, economic, psychological—to buy a pint of ice cream, a nostalgic bag of cookies, or a special bottle of wine; the opportunity to make food with the hands, from scratch, if so desired; the courage to make informed choices based on preference, evidence, and histories; the space and wisdom to grow a selection of herbs and vegetables; the privilege and responsibility of knowing how soil, seed, and sunlight arrive as food on our tables
Joy
Gathering around the table with friends and family, bonded by bloodlines and shared memories, to eat what someone lovingly prepared; celebrating a living heritage in a single dish; discovering strange and lovely new flavors from lives so different from ours, and finding common ground on the dining plate; commemorating a sister’s graduation, a friend’s dream job, or a grandmother’s 90th birthday with a thoughtful feast of favorites and indulgences; catching up with friends over a few drinks at a well-loved restaurant; savoring sweet solitude with a bowl of comfort food; finding tenderness in an heirloom spoon
Nourishment
From rice and bread, the strength to rise every morning, regardless of the weather; from fish, seeds, and garbanzos, the ability to regenerate, grow, think with clarity; from homemade soup, learned from a mother, the warmest hug; from whole grains and leafy greens, physical and mental balance gained from symbiosis; from root crops, invisible lessons on resilience; from coffee, tea, and cocoa, a sharp mind matched with a fierce spirit; from a fragrant bowl of herbs, spices, and noodles, the vigor to run a fever and face another day; from a handful of berries or an orange slice, a bounce in the step, a zest for life; from clean, mineral-rich water, life itself
